Reading Outside of Your Specialty from Mathieu Brunet

July 1, 2024 by Scott Weingart, MD FCCM Leave a Comment

I’m a big believer in reading outside our specialty. I think that’s the key to not becoming just another copy of every other EM doc. Also, the return on time investment (in terms of learning) becomes less and less if you always stay within the echo chamber of the EM/CC world. Here are some suggestions “by system” of good resources outside of EM/CC:

  • Internal Medicine / Clinical Reasoning
    • RLR podcast: I can’t recommend it enough (RLR CPSolvers)
    • Read the weekly Case Record of the MGH in the NEJM
  • Neurology
    • Continuum journal: Listen to the podcast and read the “key points for the issue” (Continuum)
    • Listen to the “Neurology VMR” episodes (Clinical Problem Solving)
  • Cardiology
    • CardioNerds podcast (CardioNerds)
    • Learn advanced echocardiography (write the CCEeXAM!) and then follow this YouTube channel (Echo at Nepean)
  • Gastroenterology / Surgery
    • Attend the virtual Emergency Surgery Course (AAST)
  • Renal
    • The Curbsiders had some good renal and endocrine episodes over the years, for example the reboot /48 episode on hyponatremia (The Curbsiders)
  • Hematology and Infectious Diseases
    • Topics covered by the clinical reasoning suggestions above
  • Trauma
    • DSTC manual: Read cover-to-cover (Amazon)
    • Follow the case conferences from the Panamerican Trauma Society (Panamerican Trauma Society)
    • Skim through the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery each month
  • Radiology
    • Entry level: Go through the Radiopaedia courses related to EM (Radiopaedia)
    • Watch the American Society of Emergency Radiology annual conference lectures (Content available for 6 months after the event. This is the only conference I watch) (ASER)
    • For regular simulations: Case Stacks Radiology Call Simulator
